A Stay at Castello di Reschio

Another Signature Sol Destination Worth Sharing

We had the absolute joy of staying in the rolling hills of Umbria, just next door to Tuscany, at the historic Castello di Reschio. From learning about its noble lineage to exploring the grounds on horseback and soaking in the Roman baths, every moment felt like stepping into another world. Reschio is more than a hotel - it’s a living estate. With organic farms, stables, vineyards, olive groves, and design workshops, it’s a rare blend of deep-rooted history and quiet, contemporary elegance. Scroll to see a glimpse of our stay.

A place of deep stillness and subtle magic, where art, architecture, and the rhythms of the land come together to create something timeless and extraordinary.

The History of the Castle

Castello di Reschio dates back to the year 1050, originally built as a defensive stronghold during medieval times on the Umbrian-Tuscan border. Over centuries, the castle changed hands between noble families and ecclesiastical powers. Its past is steeped in feudal tradition, war, and diplomacy, reflecting the layered and complex history of central Italy. In 1994, the Bolza family, originally from Austria and Hungary, acquired the estate. Count Benedikt Bolza, an architect and designer, led the charge in restoring Reschio with an eye for detail, craftsmanship, and reverence for the past. Hence the extremely well-kept intentionality and charm of the property.

Reschio Hotel

vs Houses

When visiting the Castle, there are a few accommodation options to choose from. During our stay, we booked a room within the hotel, which officially opened in 2021. It beautifully blends ancient stone walls with custom-made furniture, Italian craftsmanship, and modern comfort—breathing new life into a thousand years of history.

For longer stays or group travel, there are also private houses available to rent—or even own—making it an ideal option for families or those traveling with a larger group.

Offerings While Staying at Reschio

Roman Bath House: Step into the quiet luxury of the Roman baths, where warm stone, candlelight, and thermal waters create the dreamiest reset. It’s the kind of slow, sensory experience you’ll want to linger in.

Foraging and Outdoor Cooking: Wander the estate’s wild corners with a guide to forage seasonal herbs, greens, and mushrooms. Then cook what you’ve gathered over an open flame - it's simple, rustic, and unforgettable.

Pasta Making: Learn the art of handmade pasta with Reschio’s chefs, rolling, shaping, and laughing your way through a truly Italian ritual. It's hands-on, soulful, and best enjoyed with a glass of estate wine in hand.

Clay Sculpting: In a peaceful studio tucked within the estate, try your hand at sculpting with local clay. No pressure to be perfect, just space to create, play, and connect with something tactile.

Horseback Riding: Explore the estate on horseback, winding through olive groves and ancient trails with views that stretch for miles. The stables are home to elegant Andalusian horses, lovingly trained and deeply connected to the land. You can find photos from our hack pictured below.

Falconry: Meet the estate’s majestic birds of prey and experience the ancient art of falconry. It’s intimate and awe-inspiring and equal parts history lesson while connection with the wild.

Wine Tasting: Sip your way through the estate’s own wines in a setting that feels more like a friend’s home than a tasting room. Each pour tells a story of the soil, the sun, and the slow rhythms of Umbrian life.

Tennis: Play a match on Reschio’s beautifully kept clay courts, surrounded by cypress trees and countryside calm.

E-Biking: Hop on an e-bike and cruise the hills and hidden paths of the estate with ease. Perfect for sunrise rides or golden hour exploring, it’s freedom on two wheels.

Thoughtfully Curated Design

Every corner of Castello di Reschio feels intentional. Nothing loud or overdone, just quietly exquisite. From custom-made furniture (which is also available to shop!) to centuries-old stone walls, the design strikes this rare balance of lived-in warmth and refined elegance. It's layered, textural, and deeply personal. It's filled with pieces crafted by local artisans, family-designed details, and spaces that invite you to slow down and stay awhile. You can feel the care in every room, like someone really thought about how you’d live there—not just visit.
