About the Show:
"we are all voyeurs in our own lives. looking out through these two port holes in a face we’ll never know connected to rods and cones activated all inner energy. what else holds us together but love? how else do you explain the mystery of all this? i can’t explain it anymore than you can. to borrow an analogy about an elephant, i believe we are all seeing the same thing from slightly different points of view. underneath it all, same shit going on.
from my personal experiences with pain and loss and grief and meditation and plant medicine these works are born. having spent enough time alone to find i’m never alone is probably the best way i can describe what compels me to paint. connecting with all the many versions of myself, most of all the inner child. this work has been so important to me and my human development.
it is never easy for me to articulate with any certainty what these works are or what i feel going into them. i take great care with my line work and looking for balance in the forms themselves. but what materializes is connected somewhere deep in my body to the state of evolution. how i look outward and hold the world up in front of me like a mirror, both broken and whole. and somewhere, amidst all this, i find myself working."
About Kyle:
Kyle Andrew Steed (b. 1982; Savannah, GA) is a self-taught painter and muralist. For the first eighteen years of his life he moved across the Southeastern US before finally settling in Texas. This itinerant childhood where he often sought stability and a sense of home gave way to his singular visual language that draws from a deep well of influences including meditation, impermanence, identity and self-actualization.
Following his graduation from high school he enlisted in the US Air Force where he was assigned to an intelligence outpost in Japan. He came home to Dallas, Texas in 2007. For the following five years he worked in the digital design space and created over a dozen hand-written font libraries. This season in his life greatly informs his work which borrows font makings rigid guidelines as well as the fluid nature of the human form.
From the intimate scale of his sketchbooks to the monumental scale of his murals and paintings the common thread of the work lies in the exploration of the relationship between the human body and the landscapes we inhabit. All while keeping the question in mind, is the body a landscape of its own?
